Porträts Jüdischer Künstlerinnen im Zeitalter der Extreme
Angeregt durch zwei Ausstellungen: „Kunst aus dem Holocaust“ im Jahr 2016 im Deutschen Historischen Museum in Berlin und „Die bessere Hälfte“ 2016/17 im Jüdischen Museum in Wien begab sich Manya Gutman auf die Spurensuche nach jüdischen Künstlerinnen im „Zeitalter der Extreme“.
Viele kennen Sonja Delaunay, Meret Oppenheim oder Gisèle Freund. Aber wie ist es mit Dora Bromberger, die bei Hans Hofmann in München studierte, ab 1928 Mitglied in der Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Künstlerinnen und Kunstfreunde (GEDOK) in Bremen war und 1942 in der Vernichtungsstätte Maly Trostinez ermordet wurde? Oder Malva Schalek, die in Theresienstadt den Lageralltag in über 100 Zeichnungen und Aquarellen festhielt? Diese Arbeiten konnten versteckt überdauern, sie wurde in Auschwitz ermordet. Oder die Hamburger Künstlerin Anita Rée, die sich nach einer Hetzkampagne der Hamburger „Tageszeitung“, die sie öffentlich diffamierte und ihr Werk „undeutsch“ nannte, am 24. Dezember 1933 das Leben nahm.
Das Projekt umfasst gut 100 gezeichnete Porträts, die in den Jahren 2019 bis 2023 entstanden sind. Die dazugehörenden Kurzbiographien wurden von Ellen Presser, Journalistin und Leiterin des Kulturzentrums der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde München und Oberbayern, Dr. Jürgen Kaumkötter und der Journalistin und Autorin Henriette Schröder erstellt.
