Die Idee zur Ausstellung „Kunst der Erinnerung“ mit Werken von Marian Ruzamski stammt von Marian Turski, einem polnischen Journalisten und Historiker jüdischer Herkunft. Geboren wurde er am 26. Juni 1926 in Druskieniki, Polen (heute Druskininkai, Litauen). Er war Häftling im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz. Turski ist Vorsitzender des Jüdischen Historischen Instituts in Warschau und Vorsitzender des Internationalen Auschwitz Komitees. Seine berühmte Rede „Auschwitz warnt“ im Jahr 2020 beim 75. Jahrestag der Befreiung von Auschwitz unterstreicht seine unermüdliche Arbeit gegen das Vergessen und für den Kampf gegen Antisemitismus und Rassismus.

Marian Ruzamski (1889-1945) berührt mit seinen Kunstwerken die Menschen tief. Seine sensiblen Werke zeichnen sich durch eine lebendige Farbpalette und die Fähigkeit aus, die Essenz seiner Motive einzufangen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde Ruzamski nach Auschwitz verschleppt und starb später im Lager Bergen-Belsen. Seine eindrucksvollen Porträts aus Auschwitz wurden bereits mehrfach gezeigt. Nun soll sein gesamtes Werk erstmals in Deutschland zugänglich gemacht werden, um den Künstler zu ehren und den Betrachtern zu zeigen, wie tief der Einschnitt des Terrors in den Lagern für die Menschen war. Dabei wird auch sichtbar, wie der Künstler sich der Zerstörung widersetzte und wie die Kraft der Kunst, selbst in den dunkelsten Zeiten, ein Ausdruck von Hoffnung und Widerstand sein kann.
Kunstwerke haben die Fähigkeit, die menschlichen Grausamkeiten und Schicksale des Holocaust auf eindringliche Weise darzustellen. Sie sind emotionale Zeugen und können Brücken schlagen, die die Erinnerung an die Opfer mit zukünftigen Generationen verbinden. Durch ihre emotionale Kraft können Kunstwerke Mitgefühl und Empathie wecken und leisten so einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Bildung und Sensibilisierung. Sie fördern das Gedenken und das Verständnis der Vergangenheit und tragen dazu bei, dass die Lehren aus der Geschichte nicht vergessen werden. Während die Zahl der Zeitzeugen kontinuierlich abnimmt, gewinnen visuelle und künstlerische Darstellungen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Das Bewusstsein für diesen Paradigmenwechsel bildet den thematischen Hintergrund der Ausstellungsidee.
Die Ausstellung wird vom Museum Zentrum für verfolgte Künste mit dem dem Museum Schloss Tarnowski in Tarnobrzeg, dem Staatlichen Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau unter der kuratorischen Beratung von Marian Turski organisiert.
In Vorbereitung zu dieser Ausstellung fand am 4./5. September 2024 im Zentrum für verfolgte Künste die deutsch-polnische Tagung „Vergangenheit erinnern, Zukunft gestalten“ zu Leben und Werk von Marian Ruzamski und dem Kampf gegen Antisemitismus statt.
Die Ausstellung wird von der Gerd-Kaimer-Bürgerstiftung Solingen gefördert.
