The idea for the exhibition "The Art of Remembrance" with works by Marian Ruzamski came from Marian Turski, a Polish journalist and historian of Jewish origin. He was born on June 26, 1926 in Druskieniki, Poland (now Druskininkai, Lithuania). He was a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Turski is chairman of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw and chairman of the International Auschwitz Committee. His famous speech „Auschwitz warns“ in 2020 on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz underlines his tireless work against forgetting and for the fight against anti-Semitism and racism.

Marian Ruzamski (1889-1945) touches people deeply with his work of art. His sensitive works are characterized by a vibrant color palette and the ability to capture the essence of his subjects. During the Second World War, Ruzamski was deported to Auschwitz and later died in the Bergen-Belsen camp. His impressive portraits from Auschwitz have already been shown several times. Now his entire work is to be made accessible in Germany for the first time to honor the artist and show viewers how deeply the terror in the camps affected people. It will also show how the artist resisted destruction and how the power of art, even in the darkest times, can be an expression of hope and resistance.
Works of art have the ability to depict the human cruelty and fate of the Holocaust in a haunting way. They are emotional witnesses and can build bridges that connect the memory of the victims with future generations. Through their emotional power, works of art can arouse compassion and empathy and thus make an important contribution to education and awareness. They promote remembrance and understanding of the past and help to ensure that the lessons of history are not forgotten. While the number of contemporary witnesses is continuously decreasing, visual and artistic representations are becoming increasingly important. Awareness of this paradigm shift forms the thematic background of the exhibition idea.
The exhibition is organized by the Museum Center for Persecuted Arts with the Tarnowski Castle Museum in Tarnobrzeg, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum under the curatorial advice of Marian Turski.
In preparation for this exhibition, the German-Polish conference „Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future“ on the life and work of Marian Ruzamski and the fight against anti-Semitism took place on September 4th/5th, 2024 at the Center for Persecuted Arts.
